ENMU-Ruidoso set to host College Cross Country Meet and College Rodeo in October

ENMU-Ruidoso Branch Community College is in its second year of having college athletic teams in Cross Country and Rodeo.

The ENMU-Ruidoso Cross Country Team will host their second home meet on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 9 a.m. at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Golf Course in Mescalero. There will be a Women’s 5K and a Men’s 8K. College students from the following colleges and universities will be attending: El Paso Community College, New Mexico Junior College, University of the Southwest, Northern New Mexico, and ENMU-Ruidoso. Approximately 50 men and 50 women college students will be competing. The top ten men and top ten women will receive medals, and the first-place men’s and women’s runners will receive a carved wooden bear trophy. Wanderlust Running, Pizza Hut and the Inn of the Mountain Gods are sponsoring the meet. ENMU-Ruidoso has two students on the Women’s Team: Chyenne Marrufo, a sophomore from Las Cruces studying criminal justice, and Ashtyn Walter, a freshman from Moriarty studying natural sciences. The Men’s Team has seven students; Cole Hanshew, a sophomore from Lubbock studying natural sciences; Brayden Rocha, a sophomore from Mescalero studying general studies; Gavin Castillo of Mescalero is undecided; Javyn Frank, a freshman of Bloomfield studying business administration; Robert Muniz of Hagerman is studying welding; Jerimy Williams, a freshman of Ruidoso is studying welding; Jack Wisdom, a freshman of Capitan is studying business administration; and Simon Vasquez, a freshman of Ruidoso is undecided. The Cross Country Head Coach is Micay Bray, and the Assistant Coach is Shane Ashbury.

The ENMU-Ruidoso College Rodeo Team will host its first home rodeo Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17, at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in Capitan. The rodeo performances will be on both days at 6 p.m., and slack will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. Tickets will be $10 per person at the gate. The College Rodeo will bring in approximately 250 student rodeo athletes from the following colleges and universities: Central Arizona College, Cochise College, Dine College, ENMU-Ruidoso, Mesalands Community College, Navajo Technical University, New Mexico State University, and the University of Arizona. The college students will enter to compete in the nine college rodeo events. The men’s events are saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, bull riding, tie down riding, steer wrestling and team roping. The women’s events are barrel racing, goat tying, breakaway roping and team roping. Trophy buckles will be awarded to the top contender in each event as well as an all-around cowboy and cowgirl.

The Women’s Rodeo Team has three students: Breakaway Roper and Team Roper Olyvia Hildman of Nogal, who is studying core curriculum; Barrel Racer Savannah Fresquez of Bernalillo, who is studying business; and Team Roper and Barrel Racer Camielle Taylor of El Paso, who is pursuing general studies. The Men’s Rodeo Team has four students: Team Roper Marcus Casaus of Cuba, who is studying agriculture; Tie Down Roper, Steer Wrestler, and Team Roper Eli Foster of Triumph, Ill.; Tie-Down Roper and Team Roper Walker Hanafin of Argenta, Ill., who is studying business; and Bull Rider Miguel Martinez of Chama, who is pursuing general studies.
