Two ENMU-Ruidoso Freshmen Competed in Oklahoma

The ENMU-Ruidoso Men’s Golf team, both freshman Robbie Rodriquez and Anthony “Jace” Hernandez, made their collegiate debut at Southwestern Christian Invitational Sept. 2-3 in Oklahoma City, Okla. The duo teed it up for the first time at their opening college tournament, facing both challenging weather and nerves that often come with a first outing at this level.
The opening round on Tuesday was slowed by heavy rain that persisted through the early hours. Wet conditions made the course play longer and more demanding, forcing both golfers to battle through soggy fairways and slower greens. Robbie finished the first round at +19, while Jace posted a +30. Despite the early struggles, both players remained determined to settle into their games. By the second round, the players began to show their resilience and ability to adapt. Robbie bounced back strongly, carding a much improved +6, while Jace, though still working through course adjustments, lowered his mistakes and gained valuable experience with a +22. Their performance underscored their commitment to improving with every hole and gaining confidence in their swings under pressure.
Looking ahead to Wednesday’s round, both Robbie and Jace expressed confidence that they will continue to sharpen their play now that they are more familiar with the course layout and conditions.
“The first day was tough, but we learned a lot,” said Robbie. “I know I can play better, and I’m excited for the next round.” Jace echoed his teammate’s determination, “It was a challenge, but now that we’ve seen the course, I know I can compete harder tomorrow.”
With improved weather conditions, the ENMU-Ruidoso Golfers Robbie and Jace wrapped up their latest tournament with determination. Robbie battled through the third round, carding a +7, before finishing strong with scores of 79 and 84 in the final two rounds. His steady play showed resilience against tough competition. Anthony also had highlights during the week, notching two birdies on holes 3 and 13. Though he closed with rounds of 94 and 93, his ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities showed promise. Both golfers gained valuable experience on the course, building momentum as they continued to grow their game.
The ENMU-Ruidoso duo now turns its attention to their next challenge and return to familiar territory for a home tournament at The Links in Ruidoso. With confidence and course knowledge on their side, they look forward to bouncing back with strong performances.
